.for the art of ad campaigns

The two most amazing fall ad campaigns of 08 consist of doses of american minimalism and italian blossom accordingly.

Calvin Klein as the master of contemporary simplicity promotes in an absolutely consistent way le profil of his brand. Suvi Koponen appears to be the perfect muse for this visualisation of the brand's image. The angles that the light and clothes form as well as the dark clothes, all give an edgy turn to CK minimalism.

One year after her first campaign for Calvin Klein, Suvi Koponen is back in the spotlight for Francisco Costa’s latest collection. The campaign was photographed by Fabien Baron at Milk Studios on April 3rd and 4th, with styling done by Camilla Nickerson and Karl Templer, hairdressing by Eugene Souleiman, and makeup by Lucia Pieroni.

In a release to WWD, Costa had this to say about the collection, and choice to use Suvi: “The clothes are categorized by sharp, angular lines with a real emphasis at the waist, torso and legs. We thought that Suvi was the perfect choice to bring that to life in this very graphic campaign. She’s so current and versatile in her look and expression. She really exudes a certain strength that echoes the overall look of the season.”

And then some miles away we find Emilio Pucci 's ad campaign. An original surprise consisting of heterogeneous elements. Juergen Teller's harsh lighting pairs with Pucci's colours in a very unique way and in all this stars the photographer's favourite Mariacarla Boscono.

Haute ou pas?

In France, the term haute couture is protected by law and is defined by the Chambre de commerce et d'industrie de Paris based in Paris, France. Their rules state that only 'those companies mentioned on the list drawn up each year by a commission domiciled at the Ministry for Industry are entitled to avail themselves' of the label haute couture. The criteria for haute couture were established in 1945 and updated in 1992.

To earn the right to call itself a couture house and to use the term haute couture in its advertising and any other way, members of the Chambre syndicale de la haute couture must follow these rules:

-Design made-to-order for private clients, with one or more fittings.
-Have a workshop (atelier) in Paris that employs at least fifteen people full-time.
-Each season (i.e., twice a year), present a collection to the Paris press, comprising at least thirty-five runs with outfits for both daytime wear and evening wear.

However, the term haute couture has been misused by successive ready-to-wear brands and high street labels since the late 1980s so that its true meaning has become blurred with that of prêt-à-porter (the French term for ready-to-wear fashion) in the public perception. Every haute couture house also markets prêt-à-porter collections, which typically deliver a higher return on investment than their custom clothing. In fact, much of the haute couture displayed at fashion shows today is rarely sold; it is created to enhance the prestige of the house. Falling revenues have forced a few couture houses to abandon their less profitable couture division and concentrate solely on the less prestigious prêt-à-porter. These houses, such as Italian designer Antonio Capucci, all of whom have their workshops in Italy, are no longer considered haute couture.

Many top designer fashion houses, such as Chanel, use the word for some of their special collections. These collection are often not for sale or they are very difficult to purchase.

Fever In the morning

Although this inner thinking need grew up on me during the last days and as i have posted below i would stop blogging for some days (having in mind for a week), i went ill (2nd time this year) and i 'm tortured by this horrible fever now. Since yesterday i 'm in my pyjamas doing almost nothing. This evening though i felt a little bit better and couldn't help it but stick in front of my pc..

Oscar's 2008 never worn dream dresses

Style.com tapped ten designers to create the perfect gown for the Oscar's leading ladies. Clockwise, Peter Som went for 'peacock' shades and a layered chiffon and tulle look for Cate Blanchett. Costello Tagliapietra created an amazingly erotic dress for Amy Ryan using mainly gold panne velvet and some discrit slits on the back. Richard Chai having in mind Tilda Swinton and her "i hate chic!" declaration opted for something playful and ethereal. I would love to have seen her in this dress.. For the younger ones Phillip Lim accentuated that:"One error a lot of young actresses commit at awards shows is that they make themselves look a lot older than they actually are by wearing overpowering clothes." And indeed both Ellen Page and Saoirse Ronan fell in this trap, don't you think? Therefore Lim went for a cinched waist and the organza flower at the shoulder to play a little bit more with the lines sticking to simplicity. Rodarte designed for Saoirse Ronan a fantasy bubble pink pleated tulle dress just for her age and the event. Gorgeous!

Are you sure now my ladies that you chose the right dress for you? I have some serious doubts now that i 've seen these. At least on paper they all seem like true fairy tale. I wonder why we don't often see such wonderful and unique pieces when the red carpet time arrives.

Smile please!

"Iekeliene Stange doesn't just take photos to work out her wrists, they actually end up in magazines like Muse, Japanese Harper's Bazaar and The Room for all (ok, some of) the world to see.

She's currently taking black-and-white photos of the backstage madness during Paris Fashion Week, all of which will be, according to her, "from my perspective."

According to WWD, she plans to show an exhibition of her work, which covers several seasons of fashion, at a London gallery."

It 's SNOW time.

Milan FW for FALL 0809 may have opened its doors yesterday morning, Saturday 16 and made me crave for some irregularity* de nouveau.. BUT today i woke up and ,yes, it hasn't ceased snowing from last night. This beautiful white veil is still covering every flower, tree, car, rooftop and walking beanie. I couldn't resist of course having the least of fun by going out and taking some chilly pictures.

I 'm singin' in the snow..

But what you don't know is that (...) it's actually cerulean.

is not just blue, it's not turquoise, it's not lapis... *

The best part of FWs are the 'shows' before and after the actual show, with loads of champagne and delis, goofiness, laughs, hugs, model style, funny poses, beautiful portrait pictures taken, applausing and above all a sweet anxiety for the upcoming and a huge relief when lights turn out.
Voilà some of the backstage/front row (waiting for the show to begin) and after-show party moments:
